Who is the favorite to win the 2026 World Cup? Defending champions Argentina top the FIFA ranking, with Spain and France right behind and England, Brazil and Portugal firmly in the mix. Seven former winners qualified — Brazil, Germany, Argentina, France, Uruguay, England and Spain — so the S tier picks itself.
The dark horses. Morocco carried Africa to the semi-finals in 2022 and lead a group of genuine spoilers — Croatia, Uruguay, Colombia, Japan and Senegal — any of which could gatecrash a group of death and upset a favorite.
The debutants. Four nations reach the World Cup for the first time — Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan and Uzbekistan — with Curaçao (population ~156,000) the smallest country ever to qualify. A record eight Arab nations made it too.
Did Italy qualify for the 2026 World Cup? No. The four-time champions missed a third straight World Cup after a playoff defeat, and Denmark also fell short — which is why neither appears in the template. History guarantees nothing.
The expanded format changes everything. The 48 teams are drawn into 12 groups of four (A to L). The top two from each group, plus the eight best third-placed teams, advance to a brand-new Round of 32 — then it is straight knockout through the Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final, for a record 104 matches.
Games span 16 host cities across three countries. The tournament runs from 11 June to 19 July 2026, kicking off with Mexico in Mexico City and ending with the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Rank your S tier before kickoff, then come back and re-tier as the groups shake out.
