Ask ten people to rank car brands and you'll get ten different definitions of good. One of them means it starts at twenty below for fifteen straight winters. Another means resale value, or the badge on the grille, or how the steering loads up on a back road. So does dealer experience, interior quality, and how a ten-year-old example is holding up on a used lot. S-tier is the badge you'd recommend to a friend with no caveats attached. It has to hold up on reliability, on how it drives, and on what it costs to keep — a brand that nails one of those and fumbles the other two isn't S-tier, however loud its fans get. Picture buying blind and daily-driving it for ten years; the makers you'd still trust in that scenario are your S tier car brands. A-tier is the strong all-rounders. B and C hold the "depends entirely on which model" names, which honestly covers most of the industry. D is for known reliability problems and prices that never made sense. Two or three names in S is plenty.
