The 14 here lean classic, so the gaps are easy to spot. Chocolate chip, peanut butter, black cherry and fudge ripple are obvious adds, while matcha — green tea on plenty of menus — and bubblegum split a room fast. Seasonal flavors make a good stress test: is pumpkin or peppermint genuinely S-tier, or only S-tier in its own month? Settle early whether sherbet, frozen yogurt, soft serve and dairy-free or vegan pints count as ice cream on your board, because somebody will ask the moment you share it.
An S-tier flavor gets ordered on autopilot — right in any weather, any mood, no second look at the board behind the counter. The ones you ask for without reading the menu are your S tier ice cream flavors. A-tier are the reliable crowd-pleasers, B and C cover the "sure, why not" scoops, and D is where the flavors you have never once craved end up. Pure taste can settle the whole thing, though texture, mix-ins and toppings are fair to bring in if you want a finer sort.
Format quietly changes the verdict as well. A flavor that's perfect in a waffle cone can turn heavy under hot fudge and sprinkles in a sundae, and the pint in your freezer rarely tastes quite like the same flavor from a scoop shop. Pick one setting — cone, cup or pint — and judge richness, texture and how the mix-ins hold up inside it, worst to best.
Flavors are only half the argument; the other half is who makes them. Brands aren't in the tray, so type them in yourself — and grocery store pints make the fairest fight: Ben & Jerry's, Häagen-Dazs, Breyers, Blue Bell, Tillamook and whichever store brand you actually buy. Scoop shops such as Baskin-Robbins and Cold Stone are a different contest, since you're paying for the counter as much as the carton, so give them their own board or say up front that they're mixed in. And judge each brand on what you order from it most — one bad pint of a flavor you'd never normally pick is a thin reason to send a whole brand to D.
