S-tier means you would take it every time, in any mood, without checking what else is in the cooler. Rank on habit rather than opinion and it gets easier still: whatever you buy without thinking about it is one of your S tier sodas. A-tier is the dependable order, B and C are the "yeah, fine" cans, and D is where flat, cloying and faintly medicinal go to sit together. Taste on its own is a perfectly respectable standard, though carbonation, sweetness and aftertaste are there for anyone who wants to be thorough about it.
Coca-Cola is the soda that lands in S tier most often, with Dr Pepper and Mountain Dew the two that most reliably fight it for the top row. That is a popularity answer rather than a verdict — "best soda" splits hard by category, and a cream soda person and a citrus person are never going to agree. Ranking every soft drink against every other one is how you end up comparing root beer to grape. Split them by category first and the board gets much easier to fill:
Zero-sugar recipes have closed most of the gap, which is why best diet soda arguments now look a lot like the full-sugar ones. Coke Zero Sugar is the usual pick for tasting closest to the original, Diet Coke is its own distinct drink that people either love or refuse, and Dr Pepper Zero holds up better than most because the flavour was busy enough to hide the swap. Whether diet versions belong on the same board as the originals is a genuine tier-list argument — some people rank them side by side, others keep a separate row. Both are fine; just pick one before you start dragging.
Every soda tier list turns into the same argument eventually. Cola loyalists defend their brand as a matter of identity, citrus enjoyers insist the whole cola category is overrated, and root beer defenders quietly maintain that neither camp has tasted anything properly.
The cola wars gave that argument its shape. Blind taste tests have a long history of favouring Pepsi, and the usual explanation is Pepsi's sweetness — a sweeter, more citrus-forward profile tends to win a single sip, which is exactly what those tests measure. Branded tests favour Coke more often, and so does drinking a whole can rather than a mouthful. Neither result settles it, which is why both sides still have devoted S-tier supporters.
Preference also divides preferences regionally in ways that catch people out. Cheerwine and Sun Drop are unremarkable in one state and non-negotiable in the next, and ginger ale outranks everything in some households while never appearing in others. If your board looks nothing like anyone else's, geography is usually part of the reason.
Anything missing is worth adding before you rank.
