Tier list letters explained

Tier lists rank things into lettered rows, but what does each letter actually mean? Here is the full S-A-B-C-D-F scale explained, so you know exactly where to place things. (For the top rank specifically, see what S tier means.)

The full letter scale

A standard tier list runs from S at the top down through the alphabet:

  • S — the best; special, superior, a clear cut above.
  • A — excellent; great picks just below the very top.
  • B — good and solid; reliable with no real complaints.
  • C — average; perfectly fine but nothing special.
  • D — below average; you can do better.
  • F — the worst; bottom of the barrel (E is usually skipped).

Each tier meaning, one by one

Searching for a specific rank? Here is what each tier means on its own:

  • S tier meaning: the elite — special/superior, better than the best of the rest. More on S tier.
  • A tier meaning: excellent and highly recommended, just short of the top.
  • B tier meaning: good, solid and dependable — a safe pick.
  • C tier meaning: average and middle-of-the-pack — fine, but unremarkable.
  • D tier meaning: below average — a weak pick that disappoints.
  • E / F tier meaning: the worst — avoid; bottom of the list.

What is a SABCDEF tier list?

A SABCDEF tier list simply spells out the full scale — S A B C D E F — from best to worst. It is the same lettering you see everywhere, written in order. Some people also call a blank one a tier sheet or tier template. Most everyday lists stop at D (an S–D board); adding E and F gives you extra room for a harsher ranking.

Why letters instead of numbers

Letters group items into bands rather than forcing a strict order. Everything in B tier is treated as roughly equal, which matches how people actually feel — you know your favorites are favorites without ranking them 1-to-50. It is faster and easier to read at a glance.

How many letters to use

Five rows (S, A, B, C, D) is the classic setup, but there are no rules. Add E and F for harsher rankings, or stop at C for short lists. In the tier list maker you can add, rename, recolor and remove any tier in seconds.

Letters and colors go together

The letters pair with a warm-to-cool color ramp — red for S down to blue for the lowest tier — so the ranking reads instantly. See our full guide to tier list colors and what they mean.
