Brand loyalty bends every beer ranking, which is why a blind taste test makes such a good board. Pour a few lagers into numbered cups and reveal the labels only once the tiles go into rows. Wheat beer runs from banana-and-clove hefeweizen to Belgian witbier like Hoegaarden, and stout from dry Guinness to boozy imperial stout. Most flavor fights are hops (bitter, citrus, pine) against malt (bread, caramel, roast). Most of the big names. Budweiser, Bud Light, Coors Light, Miller Lite, Heineken, Corona, Modelo, Stella Artois, Peroni, Sapporo, Asahi and Yuengling's flagship are all lagers, and pilsner is a lager style too. The difference is the yeast: lager yeast ferments cooler and slower than ale yeast, which gives a cleaner, crisper taste. Guinness, Blue Moon, Hoegaarden and Newcastle Brown Ale in the tray are ales.
There isn't one. Beer-rating sites tend to crown rare imperial stouts and hazy IPAs from small breweries, sales charts favor light lagers, and neither tells you what you'll enjoy. The most honest answer is whatever sits at the top of your own board. Rank the beers you've actually tasted, and add the local brews the tray doesn't cover.
That depends on what you mean: best-selling or best-tasting. On sales, lagers rule — industry reports in 2023 had Modelo Especial passing Bud Light as the top-selling beer in the US. Taste is another matter, and craft drinkers will point to breweries you won't find in the tray. Modelo, Bud Light and Coors Light are all loaded, so a sales-versus-taste board takes seconds to set up.
Pick one yardstick — flavor, how often you'd order it, or value for money — and keep it for the whole board. Compare side by side where you can, because memory flatters old favorites. If a mixed board feels unfair, rank styles against styles and brands against brands, and leave anything you haven't tried sitting in the tray.
