Steel resists ten types and shrugs off Poison completely. Ice resists exactly one thing, and that thing is Ice. That gap is why these rankings turn into arguments — offense and defense almost never live in the same type, and everyone weighs the two differently. This Pokémon type tier list template starts you with the types that carry the debate: Dragon, Fire, Fighting and Electric for raw pressure, Steel, Water, Fairy and Ground holding the defensive side, plus Ghost, Psychic, Dark, Grass, Bug and Ice.
You can play this strictly by the matchup chart, weighing offensive pressure against how much a type has to fear on the way in. Or throw the chart out entirely and rank on design, which is a completely respectable way to do it — Ghost and Fairy tend to climb several rows the moment aesthetics count. An S-tier type has to work on both halves of the chart: real super-effective coverage going out, and no crippling weakness coming in. Steel is the textbook case, with an enormous resistance list and one of the best defensive profiles in the game. Dragon and Fairy usually make the cut as well, which is how most people's S tier Pokémon types end up looking. A-tier is a strong type with one obvious hole in it. B and C are the situational ones that need the right team built around them. D is where the frail and the easily-walled sit, Bug and Ice being the usual residents. Rank on looks instead of matchups and the whole chart reshuffles, so say which version you're doing before someone comes for your Ghost placement.
