New Horizons gives every villager one of eight personality types: lazy, normal, peppy, jock, cranky, smug, snooty and sisterly (fans also say uchi). No villager is officially the best — Nintendo doesn't publish a ranking, so it depends on what you value. Some players judge on design or house interior, others on dialogue, and plenty rank their day-one neighbors highest. On paper, the six Sanrio villagers — Rilla, Marty, Etoile, Chai, Chelsea and Toby — since only their amiibo cards can invite them. Regular villagers have no official rarity, but hunting guides generally say a mystery island picks a species first, then a villager. Raymond is one draw among more than twenty cats; an octopus is one of four. That's why popular cats feel like the rarest villagers.

Fan sites quote slightly different totals depending on whether they count the Sanrio villagers and the characters from the free 2.0 update — Sasha, who's in this tray, arrived with it. This template has 38 villagers plus Isabelle and Tom Nook, and Add items takes the rest, one name per line.
Personality decides most of it. Normal villagers are sweet by design — polite, cheerful, easy to live with — and peppy ones are just as warm, only louder. Fauna, Marina, Molly and Goldie are normal villagers already in the tray. Sisterly villagers like Reneigh can seem blunt at first but tend to be fiercely loyal, which some players rate nicest of all.
